A new report suggests Nintendo could scale back production of the Switch 2 following weaker-than-expected sales in the United States.
According to Bloomberg, the company had initially planned to manufacture around six million units for the current quarter but is now expected to reduce output significantly. The lower production levels are also anticipated to continue into April.
Strong Launch, But Momentum SlowsPrior to launch, Nintendo was reportedly aiming to ship more than 20 million Switch 2 units within its first year. The console debuted with strong demand and record-breaking early sales, fueling optimism around its long-term success.
However, reports of slowing momentum began to surface in the months following release, including during the critical holiday period. Despite this, the Switch 2 still reached an impressive 17.37 million units sold by December 31, 2025.
Possible Hardware Revision in DevelopmentSeparately, there are indications that Nintendo may be exploring a revised version of the Switch 2 for the European market. The rumored update would include a replaceable battery, potentially in response to new regulatory requirements.
If such a revision is in development, it could partly explain the reported production slowdown, as Nintendo may be adjusting its manufacturing strategy ahead of a new model. However, this remains speculative.
No Official Confirmation YetNintendo has not officially confirmed any changes to its production plans. As of now, the reported cuts remain unverified, and the company has yet to issue a public statement.
